Cargo picking up, passengers to follow?
06.05.10
Manchester Airport has announced a sharp rise in cargo volumes for the first quarter of 2010 compared to last year. A total of 26,300 tonnes of imports and exports passed through the airport between January and March, an increase of 16% on 2009 and the strongest quarterly cargo performance since the third quarter of 2007.
The airport is also receiving increasing numbers of inquiries from airlines about new cargo routes as they look to add to their global networks and Emirates, which flies to Dubai, had a record cargo month in March. Andrew Harrison, Manchester Airport's commercial director, said the latest figures gave grounds for optimism that passenger numbers would soon be growing again too.
He said: ‘Cargo statistics are indicative of change approximately one quarter before similar change is reflected in passenger numbers, and generally in the economy as a whole too. For example, from May 2008, cargo volumes showed a year-on-year decline every month until last December, whereas the UK economy didn't officially enter recession until late 2008.’
