Airport allotments have no fruit rule
06.06.10
Green-fingered Manchester Airport staff have been banned from growing fruit at their workplace allotments – because of the danger of attracting birds and causing a plane crash, the Evening News reports.
The new allotments – just yards from the airport – have proved popular with staff, with 100 taking up for plots. But under strict guidelines those using them are not allowed to grow berries or trees because of the danger of attracting birds.
A spokesman said the ‘no-fruit’ rule was intended to make the allotments a ‘fun venture for everyone’ while ‘minimising wildlife and bird issues’. Plot owners say they enjoy the challenge of finding ‘bird-unfriendly’ alternatives.
