Naked scanners at all terminals

Full body scanners will be working at every terminal in Manchester Airport within the next two weeks, the Evening News reports. The X-ray machines allow security workers to see ‘naked’ images of passengers as they check for hidden weapons or explosives. From the week starting April 19, any passenger passing through the airport could be put through the controversial scanners.
The £80,000 Rapiscan machines were first put in in Terminal 2 in October as a part of a trial. However, they were made compulsory by the government in February as a part of a security shake-up following the failed terrorist attack on a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit in Christmas day. The newspaper reports that at least two extra scanners - one each for terminals 1 and 3 - will be installed within the next two weeks.
A spokesman for the airport confirmed that meetings were held to finalise the installation and said passengers have been increasingly aware of the technology. He told the newspaper: ‘Over 15,000 people have passed through [the scanner] thus far and people are accepting it as part of the security process. We have staff on hand to talk passengers through the process if they have any issues and the overwhelming majority are prepared to be scanned once they know why the scanner is being used. We have put strict procedures in place to reassure passengers that their privacy is going to be protected and we will continue to work with organisations and groups to show what the process is all about.’
