Airport axe free plastic bags
15.12.09
All Manchester Airport passengers face being charged for plastic security bags, the Manchester Evening News reports. Since February, passengers flying from Terminal 1 have been sold the bags - which cost £1 for two - that allow them to carry liquid containers in hand luggage through security. The charges were brought in as part of a month trial, and bosses say it was so successful they are now introducing it across the whole airport.
The airport was accused of profiteering from the anti-terrorism move after vending machines containing the bags were installed at security gates. But a spokesman said they have not made a penny - because all profits have been given to charity.
The profits from the machines have been split between Claire House children's hospice and children's charity Childflight. The airport also saves from not having to buy the bags to give them away for free, and from not having staff hading them out, but this is not mentioned in the article.
