Mini city development at airport 'will happen'

Plans to turn Manchester Airport into a ‘mini city’ have taken a step forward, according to John Atkins, Managing Director of MAG Developments - the property and development arm of Manchester Airport Group. IN an interview with thebusinessdesk.com, he said the project to turn the airport from a transport hub into a business destination, complete with offices, logistics, hotels, retail, residential, conferencing and leisure facilities ‘will happen’.
First announced at the MIPIM property convention in 2009, the plan to create an ‘Airport City’ is the final piece of the jigsaw in the further development of the airport, with the existing site combined with the adjoining 30-acre business park. Mr Atkins told the website: This is a 15 to 20 year project. We are master planning the scale of concept and types of uses. Iti s easy to look at the market today, but this is a long-term project so we will invest in that. The airport as a business is good at taking long-term decisions’
‘It is not a green field site requiring vast infrastructure and it is deliverable. The infrastructure into the site, such as the Metrolink, is already secured. People don’t realise what development we already have here – it is not necessarily about new uses but about stretching the uses that already exist on site.’
'We are looking at the airport differently to in the past. Not just at the 30 acres next to the airport but also how we develop hotel facilities, logistics facilities on the western side of the airport.’
