Ash cloud grounds WW2 bomber
17.05.10
A Lancaster bomber scheduled to fly over Manchester was grounded yesterday by the ash cloud. It was to have flown with a Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane to pay tribute to Manchester's A.V. Roe and Co. A TV helicopter filming the great Manchester run event was also forced to land.
The WW2 planes were to have carried out a fly-past as part of the firm's centenary celebrations. An airport spokesman said the cloud was ‘thicker and lower’ than previous problems for the region, which only affected aircraft above 20,000 ft. He said: ‘Unfortunately the ash cloud has managed what the Luftwaffe failed to achieve - it has kept this marvelous plane out of the sky.’
