Naked scanners backed by airport boss
20.07.10
The boss at Manchester Airports Group has backed its controversial ‘naked’ body scanners – in the week officials in Dubai refused to install them over privacy concerns, the Manchester Evening News reports. Geoff Muirhead, the soon to be leaving chief executive of MAG, said the airport was right to introduce the machines, despite fears over passenger privacy.
Mr Muirhead told students at Manchester Business School: ‘Security is intrusive by definition. You have to be aware of sensitivities, and you also have to get the balance right. There are many people of different faiths who have told me that, properly done, these body scanners are better than the physical contact they get on a pat-down. It’s important to remember that the images of passengers are not kept. They’re very fuzzy and it’s not something you would get excited by.’
