Protesters take 9ft elephant to council meeting
17.05.10
An environmental protest a Manchester council meeting this week saw campaigners arrive with a 9ft inflatable elephant, the Evening News reports. Members of the Stop Airport Expansion campaign erected the elephant, with the message 'Manchester Airport - the elephant in the room', outside the town hall to draw attention to what it considers is a major flaw in the council's carbon reduction plan.
The group is angry that the council has omitted flight emissions from its climate change document, Manchester: A Certain Future. This report sets out ways it plans to cut carbon emission levels in the city over the next 10 years.
A spokesman for the campaign group told the newspaper: ‘We don't think the council is being fair about the impact aviation is going to have on climate change targets. We believe investment in low carbon industries and rail will be better for the city. We want a debate about the airport [which is council owned] and exactly how beneficial it is to the region.’
