Airport picks up another award - briefly
22.01.10
Manchester Airport staff were celebrating after winning a travel ‘Oscar’ – only to be brought down to earth when someone stole the trophy from the awards ceremony. After picking up the best regional airport gong at the Travel Weekly Globe awards, Managing director Andrew Cornish and commercial director Andrew Harrison left it on their table while they were congratulated by industry colleagues, only to return and find the football sized trophy had gone.
The airport overcame competition from sister airports Bournemouth and East Midlands, as well as Birmingham, Cardiff and Robin Hood airports. The winners were picked by travel agents and a record 62,000 voted – 10,000 more than last year. Manchester was praised for its environmental commitment and making significant improvements in customer satisfaction surveys.
Mr Cornish said: I’m surprised someone has taken the award to add to their own display cabinet. On the positive side, it is one less to polish. On a more serious note, to have won almost all of the major travel industry awards this year really underlines the effort and investment we have put into the airport over the last few years. I’m delighted for the team who have been involved.’
