Report on Flybe flight emergency

A burning smell that caused a pilot to divert to Manchester Airport in December was caused by an overheating engine part, a report has confirmed. The Flybe plane was flying to the Isle of Man from Gatwick on December 16 when passengers noticed the ‘strong’ burning smell. An Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) report added that two passengers also saw sparks coming from an engine, prompting a Mayday call.
Emergency crews met the aircraft as it landed but no-one was injured. 45 passengers and 4 crew were travelling on the Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 when the incident occurred. The pilot and his co-pilot decided to divert the plane because of the odour, which grew stronger as they descended.
The report said: ‘An engineering examination found that the right engine air intake heater adapter had overheated and mechanically failed.’ It noted that both left and right engine air intake heat adaptors had been inspected and tested 3 days earlier. The investigators ruled that mechanical failure was to blame for the incident.
