Emergency landing closes runway

A Chicago-bound plane with 195 passengers and crew on board made an emergency landing at Manchester Airport yesterday afternoon. The plane then had to be repaired before it could be towed from the runway, causing incoming flights to be diverted.
American Airlines flight AA55 was flying from Manchester to Chicago O'Hare when a warning light raised concerns of a problem with hydraulics in the landing gear. The captain made the decision to turn back and an emergency landing was made in Manchester at around 14:10.
The airport implemented full emergency landing procedures and lined the runway with fire engines. The 'high speed landing' tore two of the plane's tires and the aircraft had to be repaired before it could be towed off the runway. This meant that operations at the airport had to be suspended for over an hour, leading to the diversion 17 incoming flights.
