Airport cleaners strike threat
25.06.08
Two hundred Unite union members working at Manchester Airport are to be balloted for industrial action as pay talks broke down. The workers involved in the strike ballot are Initial cleaners based at the hub. They are angry after the company imposed a 2% pay deal, which they had previously rejected.
Unite has called on Initial Air Services to return to negotiations to resolve the dispute and avoid any industrial action. Unite Organiser, Sharon Cowell said: ‘It is an insult that a profitable company is asking workers to accept wage deals that fail to reflect spiralling living costs.'
‘We are extremely disappointed that it has come to this and urge the company to start negotiating seriously and give our members the decent pay offer they deserve. If strike action goes ahead and there are no cleaners on the terminals, this could have serious implications for security at the airport.’
Unite will announce the ballot results for strike action tomorrow.
