Ash chaos cost £10m
27.05.10
Manchester Airport has said that the disruption caused by the volcanic ash cloud cost it at least £10m. Over 3000 flights were affected and airport bosses fear the losses could continue to rise, with more airspace shut-downs predicted during the summer.
In total the Manchester Airports Group - which also owns East Midlands, Bournemouth and Humberside airports - said that it has lost upwards of £15m from the ash cloud closures. In the last set of accounts released the group, which is owned by the 10 councils of Greater Manchester, operating profits of £78.4m were reported.
A spokesman for the airport said: ‘It is a large amount, and this is our busy summer season. We've still got about 4 months of summer left, we can still have a strong summer. But we need to make sure there is no more travel disruption, and that we start to see long-term bookings return to normal [which they have yet to do].’
