More than 500 passengers were caught up in two separate emergencies at Manchester Airport yesterday, the Manchester Evening News reports.
There were 266 passengers on a US-bound plane when the captain aborted take-off because of a suspected tyre problem. Then a jet with 245 holidaymakers flying to Manchester Airport from Palma, Mallorca was forced to make an emergency landing because of a suspected wheel fault. No-one was injured, but both aircraft were stranded on taxiways for some time.
The newspaper reports that the Philadelphia-bound US Airways Airbus A330 was heading down the runway at lunchtime when a warning light came on in the cockpit. The captain aborted the take-off and began taxiing back to the terminal, but a tyre deflated, leaving the aircraft stranded on the tarmac on the approach to Terminal 2.
Fire crews were called as a precaution after smoke was seen coming from the brakes and the passengers were evacuated down steps. As a result, two flights to Manchester, one from the Isle of Man and one from London, had to be diverted to Liverpool while an airfield operations team carried out a runway sweep.
The US airways jet was still on the taxiway, at around 15:00 yesterday, when a First Choice Airways' Airbus A320 made an emergency landing. It is reported that the problem with the jet coming from Mallorca was with its nose wheel. The plane was towed to the terminal by a tug just before 16:00.
