Manchester Airports Group (MAG) chief executive Geoff Muirhead is stepping down after 22 years with the airports operator. He will retire later this year, once a replacement is appointed.
Mr Muirhead, 60, joined in 1988 as business development director at Manchester Airport. He was promoted to CEO at the airport in 1992, and took on his current role in 2001 when the group was formed. During his time as chief executive he has overseen the construction of Manchester Airport Terminal Two and its second runway, and the acquisitions of Bournemouth, Humberside and East Midlands airports, which have transformed MAG in to the second biggest airports operator in the UK.
Mr Muirhead said: ‘By the end of this year, the economic recovery is expected to be well under way, making it the right time for me to stand down. My legacy to the new group chief executive will be the opportunity to take responsibility for a healthy, prosperous business working with a world-class team.’
MAG chairman Mike Davies said: ‘Geoff has led the group through its development in to a well-invested, award-winning company whose airports hold all of the major travel industry awards for 2009. He has been a hugely positive influence both within the group and the industry.'
