Emirates superjumbo coming to Manchester
31.03.10
The Airbus A380, the world's biggest passenger plane, will fly from Manchester Airport for the first time later this year, it has been announced. Emirates will use an A380 - which will carry over 500 passengers - on its Dubai service from September 1, making Manchester the first regional hub in world to offer flights on the aircraft.
Manchester Airport has spent around £10m on infrastructure upgrades, with work on taxiways taking place beginning next month, so that the airfield and terminal can accommodate the enormous aircraft. The Emirates' 517-seat double-decker will replace the existing boeing 777 and will depart Manchester every day at 13:30 to Dubai and onward destinations.
Fully equipped with an onboard lounge, shower spas, social area and private suites, the superjumbo is designed to provide the ultimate flying experience for its passengers. In spite of being a lot larger and better equipped than most current aircraft, it is nicknamed the 'green giant', as it is the most environmentally-advanced airliner that has been created, burning as much as 20% less fuel per seat than every other aircraft. It also generates less than half the noise of other planes on takeoff.
