216,000 passengers will fly from Manchester Airport over the new year period (from yesterday until Wednesday). Despite the struggling economy, the figure is expected to be up 6.6% on last year.
An airport spokesman said many workers will get an extra weekday holiday because New Year's Day falls on a Sunday – and they are taking advantage of this to fly away for a short break to destinations including Lisbon, Madrid, Oslo, Milan and Dublin, with New York popular for couples looking to celebrate the start of 2012 in style.
Some 132,000 people flew from Manchester over the Christmas holiday weekend, a 6% increase on last year, and round 673,000 passengers are expected to pass through the airport between December 19 and January 4 – the entire festive period.
